Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has launched a new website and Strategic Development Plan 2026-2031, marking an important step in strengthened public access to climate change and environmental information.
Officially launched on 7 May 2026, the website serves as a central digital hub for climate change and environment information that brings together data, policies and tools in one accessible, user-friendly platform, marking a significant milestone in the Ministry’s efforts to improve transparency on, and participation in, climate action.
“[The website] places people at the centre, responding to calls from nationwide consultations for greater voice, inclusion, closer services and deeper community engagement,” the MECC said in a Facebook post on the launch.
The Climate Finance Capacity Support Programme (CFCSP) supported the development of the website through the engagement of a Website Developer to design and roll-out the new and innovative website. As a longstanding partner to the MECC, the CFCSP worked closely with the Ministry to identify the scope of support required and recruit a suitable Website Developer to deliver the project.
Bringing more than 8 years of experience in website development, financial systems automation and enterprise resource planning integration, Shalmeet Lal was mobilised and began the website redevelopment in September 2025.
With the guidance of MECC Permanent Secretary, Dr Sivendra Michael, and oversight of senior MECC officials, Shalmeet led the design, development and publication of the new MECC website to increase public access to environmental information, policies and tools, supporting transparency in climate change initiatives. He also integrated the existing Fiji Climate Change Portal and Department of Environment component of the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry to the new MECC website so that the platform accurately reflects the new Ministry’s mandate and improves useability for website users. A key feature of the new MECC website is the inclusion of accessibility tools to people with disabilities to navigate through the digital platform.
At the request of Dr Michael, the new website will also include online processes related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), enabling streamlined services and improved data management in support of both national and international obligations. This second phase of development will help streamline services, improve data management and support Fiji’s national and international environmental obligations.
By improving access to information and strengthening public engagement with climate and environmental issues, the new website enables citizens, development partners and stakeholders to better understand and engage with Fiji’s climate and environmental priorities. It also supports the Ministry’s reporting requirements and broader climate commitments.
